Step 2 - Choose Your Tariffs

• Select your music use from the check boxes listed below. The applicable tariffs will appear as you do so.

• Follow the instructions under each tariff.

• Use the add and remove row buttons for multiple events.

• Receptions and fashion shows are reported quarterly. All other events are reported within 30 days of the end of the event, or where multiple events occur in a year, by January 31 of the following year.

Licensing fees and reporting requirements are dependent on the type of music use. For further information on each tariff, please click on the tariff name to follow a link to information on resound.ca:

Tariff 3 (Background Music)

This tariff covers background music at businesses such as retail stores and hospitality establishments, music provided by a background music supplier, as well as any use of music with a telephone on hold. This tariff does not apply to the use of music as live entertainment, at a live event, or to accompany fitness or dance classes, dancing, skating or other similar activity.

Tariff 5 (Live Events)

This tariff is divided into sub-tariffs which apply to different types of live events such as receptions, conventions, karaoke, fairs and exhibitions, parades, ice shows, and fireworks displays. The tariff may apply to a variety of establishments such as hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, banquet halls, golf and country clubs, festivals, fairs, and municipalities.

Tariff 6 (Dance and Fitness)

This tariff covers the use of recorded music to accompany dance or fitness activities in any indoor or outdoor venue, including nightclubs, dance clubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, halls, clubs, schools, campuses, adult entertainment clubs, fitness venues, and dance schools.

Tariff 5.A Billing Music to Accompany Live Entertainment
Calculate your licence fee: Enter the total amount of compensation paid to all performers for entertainment of which recorded music plays a part. You may enter events separately if you prefer, using the "Add row to table" button. This use of music is subject to a minimum annual fee of $37.64.

Tariff 5.B Billing Music used at Receptions, Conventions, Assemblies and Fashion Shows
Calculate your licence fee: For each venue or room that held events, list the capacity (as authorized by liquor licence or any other document issued by a competent authority) and the number of events both with and without dancing during the reporting period. Please note that use under Tariff 5.B is reported on a quarterly basis.

Tariff 5.C Billing Karaoke
Calculate your licence fee: Annual fee is dependent only on the number of days of karaoke use per week. Enter the number of days music is used for karaoke in the "Days per Week" column, and the subtotal will calculate.

Tariff 5.D Billing Festivals, Exhibitions and Fairs
Calculate your licence fee: List each event and enter the start and end dates for that event. Enter the attendance figure and the subtotal will calculate. The fee and reporting are due within 30 days after the end of the event or annually for recurring or multiple events.

Tariff 5.E Billing Circuses, Ice Shows, Fireworks, Sound and Light Shows, and Similar Events
Calculate your licence fee: Enter each event, dates, and the total amount of gross receipts from ticket sales, exclusive of any taxes, into the table below. The subtotal will calculate your fee. This use of music is subject to a minimum fee of $61.85 per event. Add additional events using the "Add row to table" button.

Tariff 5.F Billing Parades
Calculate your licence fee: The licensing fee for parades is $4.39 per float that uses music, subject to a daily minimum fee of $32.55. Enter the number of floats using music and the date(s) of the parade. The subtotal will calculate your fee for this tariff.

Tariff 5.G Billing Parks, Streets and Other Public Areas
Calculate your licence fee: This licence fee is $16.28 per day in each location that music is used, to a maximum of $111.47 for any three-month period. Enter the number of events and the date range and the subtotal will calculate. Add separate lines for each three-month period and different location.

Tariff 5.H Billing Sporting Events
Calculate your licence fee: This licence covers the use of recorded music at live sporting events such as basketball, baseball, football, hockey, skating competitions, races and track meets. This tariff applies to all use of sound recordings at the event, whether inside or outside of the stadium, arena or other venue and whether such sound recordings are played during the game itself or during the pre or post game periods (including the entrance and exit of the audience).

Tariff 5.I Billing Comedy and Magic Shows
Calculate your licence fee: This licence covers the use of recorded music at comedy and magic shows, where the primary focus is on comedians or magicians and the use of recorded music is incidental. This tariff applies to all incidental use of sound recordings at the event whether inside or outside of the venue, and whether such sound recordings are played during the event itself, during intermissions, or during the entrance and exit of the audience.

Tariff 5.J Billing Concerts
Calculate your licence fee: This licence covers the use of recorded music during the entrance and exit of audiences and during breaks in live performances at live music concerts. This tariff does not apply to the use of sound recordings as part of the live performance.

Tariff 5.K Billing Theatrical, Dance and Other Similar Live Performances
Calculate your licence fee: This licence covers all uses of recorded music at theatrical, dance or similar live events, including inside and outside the venue, pre- and post-show, and as part of the live entertainment. If recorded music is not used during the performance, any use of music will be subject to other tariffs, such as Tariff 3.B. Enter the type of music use (incidental or integral), the number of events, the total attendance, into the table below. The subtotal will calculate your fee.

Tariff 6.A Billing Theatrical, Dance and Other Similar Live Performances
Calculate your licence fee: Enter the number of days per week as well as the months per year that dancing occurs at your venue. Then enter the capacity (as authorized by liquor licence or any other document issued by a competent authority). The subtotal will calculate your annual licensing fee. Add rows for separate venues. This tariff does not apply to the use of recorded music for dance classes. Please see Tariff 6.B (Fitness Activities).

Tariff 6.B Billing Music to Accompany Fitness Activities
Calculate your licence fee: Select your use of music. If Fitness and Dance classes is selected, enter the total number of classes held during the year. For example, Sue’s Studio used recorded music to accompany 3 out of 5 dance classes daily for 303 days in 2016: Totalling 909 classes for the year, the licence fee is $316.33 plus tax for 2016. If Skating is selected, enter the total annual gross receipts from admissions (without taxes). There is a minimum fee of $38.18 for the use of music for skating. Add extra rows as needed for additional venues. For the use of Background Music in fitness venues, please select Tariff 3 to report this use. This fee is to be reported and paid within 30 days of the beginning of the following year (by January 31). “Class” is defined as a single instance within a session or program of courses, with a start and end time, on a single day.

Tariff 6.C Billing Adult Entertainment Clubs
Calculate your licence fee: Royalties to be paid for the performance in public of published sound recordings embodying musical works and artists’ performances of such works to accompany adult entertainment for the years 2013 – 2018. Adult entertainment was previously covered by Tariff 6.A for the years 2008 – 2012.
